At YSU, our program nurtures professional teaching skills along with creative and intellectual growth. Students work with art education faculty who have a diverse set of research interests ranging from the use of digital technology in the classroom, art curriculum and instruction, to international studies and multicultural art education. Small class sizes and hands-on field teaching experiences effectively prepare you to enter the profession of teaching or an advanced graduate degree program. Our graduates find rewarding and meaningful employment in public and private schools, community centers, museums and galleries.
Education at YSU include a community art program, Students Motivated by the Arts, the Butler Museum of American Art, and the McDonough Museum of Art. Area K-12 art teachers come to YSU as graduate students and adjunct faculty, sharing their experience and enthusiasm with undergraduate student teachers.
Students can elect art education as their major in the Department of Art as freshmen; however, they can only begin to enroll in art education and breath studio courses after a successful completion of the Freshman Foundation Portfolio Review. As juniors, they will be automatically transferred into the Beeghly College of Education (BCOE) to complete all required courses including those in professional education. Additional information about the degree program and curriculum requirements can be found at the BCOE. The B.S.Ed. leads to Teaching licensure in the State of Ohio.

Master of Art
The Master of Arts in Art Education program provides practicing art educators an opportunity to expand their professional resumes and to develop artistic, pedagogical, scholarly, research, and leadership capabilities through in-depth study of art studio, art history, and art education theory. Graduate study in Art Education can be applied towards doctoral study, National Board Certification, Ohio Senior Educator or Lead Educator Licensure, and professional licensure in other states. Our program extends students’ studio art-making abilities through extensive practice in a variety of studio areas, including painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, graphic design, and photography. In our program, you will combine studio practice and the study of art history with theory, personal research, and classroom pedagogy to strengthen the capacities of teachers to create dynamic K-12 visual art program. This integrated approach to the exploration of studio, arts-based educational research, technological, historical, socio-cultural, and contemporary issues in art and art education leads students to a fuller understanding of the challenges and opportunities of contemporary art education.
Students are introduced to the culture of research and scholarship in art education through collaboration with cohorts. Through critical discourse and quality academic conversation in studio art and art education, we engender professional and critical attitudes among our teacher/students. Students engage in visual research, critical readings and professional presentations, to gain new understanding of knowledge, theories and praxis in art education. Critical tasks in studio curriculum include the exploration of personal, conceptual, and professional directions in studio practice.
Enrollment in Youngstown State University’s Master of Arts program will expose you to a nationally recognized faculty with a diverse array of research and art-making interests. We offer state-of–the-art facilities in sculpture, modern computer labs, and campus wide wireless networks. The College of Fine and Performing Arts enjoys the nearby McDonough and Butler Museums, the Beecher Center, SMARTS Center, as well as the Maag Library and other campus resources.
The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the National Association of Schools of Art & Design (NASAD) are the accrediting agencies for the Art Education programs in the Department of Art, YSU.
Admission Requirements - In addition to the admission requirements of the School of Graduate Studies and Research, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- An undergraduate degree in art education and teacher certificate or professional teaching license;
- An unrecalculated cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale;
- A minimum of two years of teaching experience preferred;
- Three original letters of recommendation;
- 10-12 color images of personal artwork;
- A statement of purpose of approximately 250 words indicating intent and proposed area of specialization within art studio and capstone project (studio project track or graduate thesis track);
- A personal interview with Program Director and the Graduate Program Committee in the Department of Art may be required.
In some cases, the Graduate Program Committee in the Department of Art may require additional coursework in undergraduate studio art before regular admission is granted. To obtain regular admission, the candidate must make up deficiencies by taking the appropriate undergraduate studio courses without graduate credit.
