The Department of Art offers the following scholarships:

Roger and Gloria Jones Scholarship in Fine Arts

An annual scholarship that is renewable, but applicant must complete each year with the whole pool of applicants and go through the application and selection process each year. Recipients must be an entering freshman, have a declared major in art, music, theater or dance within the College of Creative Arts and Communication, have a minimum 3.00 GPA, and demonstrate a financial need.

Florence Simon Beecher Talent Scholarships for Incoming Freshman

Four scholarships will be awarded annually by the YSU Department of Art to incoming freshman. Recipients will be selected on the basis of artistic talent. Applicants must have a minimum 2.5 high school grade point average, apply to YSU and enroll as an art major pursuing the BFA degree.

Scholarship for Current Students

Theodore R. Cubbison Painting Scholarships (All Painting/Printmaking Majors)

Two scholarships for current students majoring in painting/printmaking will be awarded in the name of Theodore R. Cubbison. All painting/printmaking majors are encouraged to apply for this competitive award. Applicant must be a painting/printmaking major maintaining a 2.8 GPA. Applications must include an artist’s statement, statement of need and a portfolio of work to be evaluated by the selection committee. Portfolios must include 10-12 works (drawings may be included). Actual work, or CD may be submitted.

George Meshel Scholarship in Studio Art/Painting

One scholarship for a studio art student will be awarded in the name of George Meshel. All students concentrating in Painting/Interdisciplinary Studio are encouraged to apply for this competitive award. Applicant must have a 2.7 GPA. Applications must include a letter expressing interest in the scholarship and a portfolio of 10-12 works to be evaluated by the selection committee. Actual work or CD may be submitted.

Ruth Davies Newman Scholarship (Female Sophomore Art Major)

One scholarship for a female studio art major will be awarded in honor of Ruth Davies Newman, Youngstown College Class of 1943 who had to leave after her first year due to family financial circumstances. Applicants must be sophomore in class rank (must have completed first year); must have a minimum 2.5 GPA; and must demonstrate financial need (FAFSA form must be completed). Scholarship is renewable through the application and selection process provided eligibility requirements continue to be met. This award when combined with all other financial assistance will not exceed the cost of full tuition, books and supplies. Applications must include a cover letter, a statement demonstrating need and a portfolio of 10-12 works to be evaluated by the selection committee. Actual work or CD may be submitted.

Robert J. Yalch Scholarship for Studio Art (Sophomore or Junior Studio Art Majors)

One $1,200 scholarship for a sophomore or junior studio art major (preference given to students with a concentration in Interdisciplinary, Graphic Design or 3D Studies) will be awarded through a generous grant from the Robert J. Yalch Endowment. Applicants must have a 2.7 GPA and must include a letter expressing interest along with a portfolio of 10-12 works to be evaluated by the selection committee. Actual work or CD may be submitted.

Jessica C. Porcase Memorial Scholarship (Female Graphic + Interactive Design Major)

One scholarship for a female Graphic Design major (preference given to student who works part-time and played a sport in H.S.) will be awarded through a memorial fund in remembrance of Jessica C. Porcase. Applicants must have a 3.0 GPA and must include a letter expressing interest along with a portfolio of 10-12 works to be evaluated by the selection committee. Actual work or CD may be submitted.

Elaine Glasser Art Education Scholarship (Art Education Major)

One scholarship for an art education major) will be awarded through a memorial fund for Art Professor Elaine Glasser.
Applicants must have a 2.7 GPA and must include a letter expressing interest along with a portfolio of 10-12 works to be evaluated by the selection committee. Actual work or CD may be submitted.
